Serene Oasis, A Stress-Free Escapade

The Fayoum Oasis, also called the “Garden of Egypt”, is a restful break from a modern metropolis.  About 1½ hrs from Cairo, Egypt’s largest oasis is luxuriant with vegetable patches and groves of citrus fruits, olives and nuts.  Some of this fertile soil is still irrigated by old-fashioned methods of levered “Shadouf” or “Sakiyeh” pulled by donkeys, camels or water buffalos.  Most prominent though, are the enormous waterwheels, around 7 meters in diameter.
There is a lot to see and do in and around this oasis:  World-famous through the discovery of the realistic “Fayoum Portraits” displaying faces of mummies painted on wood, Fayoum is rich in native crafts (baskets & potteries) and distinctive pyramid-shaped clay-jar pigeon-coops.  Its own Protected Area, “Lake Qarun” is a recognized wetland for wintering water-birds and its water, more saline than seawater, produces 900 tons of fish and shrimp annually.

Archaeology lovers will also quench their needs at nearby sites, such as Karanis Temple completed by Neron, Dimeh ruins, Kasr El Sagha & Kasr Qarun, the pyramids of Hawara and Illahoun and the Temple of Medinet Madi.
Not to be missed is the uninhabited Saharan Oasis of Wadi El Rayan, a Protected Area, with lakes, unexpected waterfalls, limestone escarpments, sand dunes, gravel flats, Greco-Roman sites and, amazingly, marine fossil remains.
